8-1 & 8-2 Potluck Wednesday, June 26th

Hello 8-1 and 8-2 families,

As we approach the last week of school, our two classes have decided to celebrate a fantastic grade 8 year with a potluck. The potluck will take place on Wednesday and participation is optional.  Students who would like to partake will not need to bring any more than 5-10 servings of their chosen snack, treat or drink.

Reminder that this Tuesday will be our locker clean-out day. Students are encouraged to take home items they can do without, Monday after school. Gym strip can also go home on Monday.

Thank you,

Edo/Meiji Quiz on Thursday

Hi 8-1 and 8-2,

Just a reminder that we have a quiz on Edo/Meiji Japan coming up on Thursday, June 13th. Students received a study guide last Friday with a list of things to know and review.

Congrats to the semi-finalists in our Poetry Bracket! The battles continue this Friday with the rule being that the poem must come from the provided list of famous poets. Good luck presenters!

Thank you for returning the Last Samurai permission forms- we will be watching this film next week.

Poetry Bracket

Hi 8-1 and 8-2!

We are well into our poetry reading bracket competition in both classes. If you are continuing on to Round 3 next Friday, the rule for the week is that your poem must be a SONNET. (Google it!)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Humanities Update

Hi 8-1 and 8-2 families,

Just wanted to send an update to keep parents in the loop about what we are up to in Humanities at this busy time of year.

1. Poetry Bracket- we are starting a poetry reading bracket competition next week. The first round (Friday May 24th) will be Canadian poetry. Students are on the hunt for a poem by a Canadian poet that is at least 12 lines to share with us next Friday. I'm sure they would love some help at home!

2. "Echoes of Edo"- we are beginning our final task around understanding Japanese worldview in Edo Japan. Students have chosen an area of interest in Japanese culture and a medium to present it, and are working on researching these and drawing connections to the isolationist nature of Edo Japan.

3. Very large spelling test- last week I had students do a giant spelling inventory that gave me (and them) a lot of information about which spelling "rules" they have mastered, and which they are struggling with. If you would like to see these, please ask your child to share them with you at home. And have them spell  "i before e" words out loud as often as possible! :)

4. Artist in Residence- we have begun working with guest artists Rachel and Mikhail on a personal abstract art project (pushing many kids out of their comfort zones!) around representing their own developing worldview. I have encouraged them to bring in things of meaning from home that we can use in this project that would symbolize their beliefs, values, opinions, or things that have impacted their worldview along the way. Stay tuned!

5. Open House Thursday evening- everyone is invited to our TMC Open House on Thursday evening as we welcome new TMC parents and showcase what students in all grades have been working on.

6. MyCBE/PowerSchool- if you can log in and attend to outstanding field trip fees online it would help us out a ton! Thank you so much!

Thank you for all of your support and I hope you enjoy a wonderful long weekend coming up soon!
