Humanities Update

Hi 8-1 and 8-2 families,

Just wanted to send an update to keep parents in the loop about what we are up to in Humanities at this busy time of year.

1. Poetry Bracket- we are starting a poetry reading bracket competition next week. The first round (Friday May 24th) will be Canadian poetry. Students are on the hunt for a poem by a Canadian poet that is at least 12 lines to share with us next Friday. I'm sure they would love some help at home!

2. "Echoes of Edo"- we are beginning our final task around understanding Japanese worldview in Edo Japan. Students have chosen an area of interest in Japanese culture and a medium to present it, and are working on researching these and drawing connections to the isolationist nature of Edo Japan.

3. Very large spelling test- last week I had students do a giant spelling inventory that gave me (and them) a lot of information about which spelling "rules" they have mastered, and which they are struggling with. If you would like to see these, please ask your child to share them with you at home. And have them spell  "i before e" words out loud as often as possible! :)

4. Artist in Residence- we have begun working with guest artists Rachel and Mikhail on a personal abstract art project (pushing many kids out of their comfort zones!) around representing their own developing worldview. I have encouraged them to bring in things of meaning from home that we can use in this project that would symbolize their beliefs, values, opinions, or things that have impacted their worldview along the way. Stay tuned!

5. Open House Thursday evening- everyone is invited to our TMC Open House on Thursday evening as we welcome new TMC parents and showcase what students in all grades have been working on.

6. MyCBE/PowerSchool- if you can log in and attend to outstanding field trip fees online it would help us out a ton! Thank you so much!

Thank you for all of your support and I hope you enjoy a wonderful long weekend coming up soon!

Ms. Liddell
