Humanities Update

Hi 8-1 and 8-2 students and parents!

Just wanted to send an update from our Humanities classes and to pass on a handy resource.

This week we have been busy presenting fairy tale retellings to wrap up our work on the Middle Ages and the catalysts for change that brought about the Renaissance. We focused on fairy tales (Grimm's versions) as cautionary tales and had some great discussions about the connection between fear and control in societies past and present. Assessments for fairy tale visuals, analysis and retellings will be up on PowerSchool next week.

Students also enjoyed finishing our initial novel study of "The Breadwinner" which brought up great ideas and insights into the idea of worldview and identity and the factors that can affect these. We are moving into the "arrival of change" and beginning to explore the great minds who came onto the scene in the Renaissance, starting with Leonardo daVinci (my personal favourite!) so stay tuned for new tasks next week.

I have shared in class the online version of the textbook that connects well to our work this year but thought it might be a useful link for parents and students to have at home as well. It can be found here: http://mrmathur.weebly.com/social-studies-8-textbook.html  Students might like to access this for their optional 15 minutes of Humanities reading and review each evening.

Have a great evening!
