Humanities Events - Discussions

Hi 8-1 and 8-2 families!

** Reminder that your free write selection needs to be typed and in your Humanities folder by Monday!

I just wanted to update parents on a few current events that have been hot topics in our Humanities class this wee, in hopes that these topics might lead to some interesting conversations at home!

Part of the Humanities outcomes for Grade 8 include students developing an awareness of their own worldview, and I love these discussions when I get to be part of them navigating their own thoughts and opinions.  We have discussed the following elements of worldview, which you may want to connect to if you are continuing these discussions at home:

Relationship to Nature (views on the environment), Views on Human Nature, Responsibility to Others, Sources of Ethical Wisdom, Equality of Others, Role of Individual and State, Views on "the good life" (what should we be aiming for?)

Here are some things we have been discussing this week in the classroom:
U.S. College Scam
- New Zealand Mosque Attacks, especially relevant because of our prior discussion around the hate mail left at an Edmonton mosque.
- Canada grounding Boeing jets after crashes (8-1)
- Parks Canada improvements (8-2)

I am very grateful for any effort parents can make to engage students in discussions around these complex issues, and discuss the ways that they connect to the elements of worldview.

Have a great weekend!
Ms. Liddell
